A car battery can be compared to a large 12V electric cell (i.e. 6 x 2V cells) which sends energy to all the vehicle's electrical (ventilation, headlights, defrosting, etc.) and electronic (ESP®, dashboard, car radio, etc.) accessories.
When the engine is running, the battery recharges by accumulating energy from the alternator (which is why it's also called an accumulator).
